T I M I N G . . .

If every aspect of an event were to be considered – from the mechanics of intention to the inevitable ripple effects – then isn’t an event’s ” T I M I N G . . .”  also a viable metric…?

With an ambiguous focal point, ” T I M I N G . . . ” considers that no action happens in isolation, and therefore no single element merits priority, regardless of visibility.

T I M I N G . . . ” suggests the connection between all aspects of an event by using the literal metaphor of a chain. The ‘cutaway’ exposes the physical mechanics beneath the glossy operation(s) depicted on the surface.

Nothing operates in a vacuum. The event itself emits its own force of (chaotic?) change beyond any real or imagined perimeter. The lowest circle surpassing the defined control boundary represents this effect-bleed.

A radiating circular pattern in the background depicts the event’s cumulative energy as greater than the sum of all the smaller operations combined. Like a ripple.

Obviously, everything makes a difference…

PROCESS

(74″ x 24″ x 2.5″) 19mm carved, frit-worked, kiln-fired monolothic glass; stainless hardware and back plate, wrapped over plywood hanger. 150lbs

(built 2015 – 2016 – completed in 2023) – part of “Interconnected” series (ongoing)

This began with my geometry drawn up onto a heavy paper stock and then cut out as a drawing template so that i could line up the two separate carvings ( front and back of glass).

The primary carving received a spray coating of frit colour, prior to being kiln-fired.

Once the kiln firing was complete, I carved the back side of the glass.

Then I worked more detail to the fritted area on the front by adding the text and a hand-scrolled (dremel tool) background to the area behind the ‘gears’.

The mounting support with stainles wrap completed the work.

Lighting of this piece is specific to create optimal reading.

NOTE:

C H O C O L A T E 2 . 0 & T I M I N G . . . are both unique – primarily in the sense that I used 19mm thickness glass. The production logistics of this choice proved much greater than anticipated, resulting in several attempts and higher material and outsource costs.

They have both taken many months to finalize and are now ready for sale.
